Web Accessibility of the Presidential Candidate Sites, December 9, 1999

The Problem

Candidates do not expect voters to follow confusing, narrow, and inflexible paths in order to register and vote. Indeed, such innovations as motor-voter registration are on the rise. Yet our examination of candidate Web sites reveals that candidates do expect their on-line constituency to follow difficult and unreliable navigation that is not tailored to their (or their browsers') abilities.

Some of today's candidate Web sites deny voters a good sense of the candidates--and, ironically, in the near future, may be violating disability law. (OrbitAccess will revisit this topic when guidelines are issued.)
